Hi, I'm Jim Barrett, owner of Happy Habitat.
My journey into lawn care started when I was a kid. My grandfather had a deal with me: if I mowed his lawn, I could use his mower and gas to mow the neighbors' lawns and earn some spending money. I still remember my grandmother asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up. My answer? “I want to have my own lawn mowing business.” Little did I know that years later, I'd turn that childhood ambition into a business of my own.
Fast-forward to 2017. My wife and I were preparing to start a family, and I was already running another business that gave me some flexibility during the day. I'd also developed a real passion for taking care of my own lawn. I spent countless hours researching fertilization, weed control, and what it takes to turn a struggling lawn into something beautiful. Eventually, I decided to turn that passion into a business.
After completing the required training and obtaining my licensing, I launched Premier Lawn Services in 2017, offering professional fertilization, weed control, and mosquito control from day one. Over time, our services evolved and became more focused on what we do best. Today, we've brought our lawn care, mosquito and tick control, and exterior pest control services together under one name: Happy Habitat.
Taking pride in every property
One thing that hasn't changed since day one is how much pride I take in our work. There's nothing better than pulling up to a customer's property and seeing a thick, healthy, beautiful lawn, especially one we've helped transform. And when something doesn't look right, I want to know why.
I expect our team to pay attention to the details, recognize problems, and take pride in the results. Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate, and no lawn is perfect, but I believe every customer deserves a company that genuinely cares about the quality of its work. That philosophy carries over into every service we provide.
Our reputation means everything
I'm incredibly proud of what we've built from the ground up. We're still a locally owned and operated company based in Kirkville, New York, serving the Central New York communities where we live, work, and raise our families. As a husband, father, and lifelong dog lover, family and community mean a lot to me. We're proud to support local organizations, including ESM Little League, through sponsorships and volunteering.
I often tell people, “If you're not happy, I'm not happy.” And I genuinely mean that.
When a customer has a concern or something doesn't go as planned, it bothers me. People trust us with their properties and their hard-earned money, and I don't take that responsibility lightly.
My goal has never been to build the biggest lawn care company. It's to build a company people can trust, one that delivers quality work, communicates honestly, and stands behind its services. That's what Happy Habitat represents to me, and it's the standard I want our entire team to live up to.
